Anuradhapura

A sacred city older than most European capitals

Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka for more than a thousand years, and its ruins spread across a huge area of forest and reservoir. The Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya stupas were among the tallest structures in the ancient world.

The Sri Maha Bodhi, grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, has been tended continuously since 288 BC, which makes it the oldest historically recorded tree on the planet. It remains a living pilgrimage city rather than a museum, and full-moon Poya days fill it with white-clad worshippers.
