Coral gardens, surf and turtles at the shoreline
Hikkaduwa was Sri Lanka's first backpacker beach and still has the easy-going feel of one, alongside rather more comfort than it used to offer. The marine national park protects a shallow coral reef directly off the main beach, so you can snorkel straight from the sand and reliably meet green turtles in waist-deep water.
The surf breaks north of the reef are consistent from November to April, there are several wreck dives offshore, and the strip along the main road is packed with cafés and board rental shacks.
