Nuwara Eliya

"Little England" in the high tea country

Nuwara Eliya is the highest town in Sri Lanka and the only place on the island where you will want a jacket. The British built it as a retreat and the bones remain: a post office in red brick, a golf course, a boating lake and bungalows with rose gardens.

Around the town the hills are covered in the estates that produce Ceylon's highest-grown leaf, and factory tours here are the real thing rather than a demonstration. Horton Plains and World's End, a sheer eight-hundred-metre drop, are an early-morning drive away.
