Trincomalee
One of the world’s finest natural harbours
Trincomalee sits on a deep natural harbour that has been fought over for four centuries, and both the fort and the clifftop Koneswaram temple tell that story. For most visitors, though, Trinco means the beaches just north of town: Uppuveli and then Nilaveli, long stretches of pale sand with warm, exceptionally calm water.
Pigeon Island, twenty minutes offshore by boat, has the best accessible snorkelling reef in the country, with blacktip reef sharks and turtles. Because the east runs on the opposite monsoon, Trincomalee is at its best exactly when the south and west are wet.
