Adam's Peak Pilgrimage Climb

Five thousand steps through the night, alongside pilgrims, to watch the mountain cast its shadow at sunrise.

Overnight (climb begins ~2am) Sri Pada, Nallathanniya December to May (pilgrimage season)

Adam's Peak is the most atmospheric thing you can do in Sri Lanka. You start climbing around two in the morning, on a stairway of roughly five thousand steps lit the whole way and lined with tea stalls, moving alongside Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian pilgrims who all hold the summit sacred for different reasons.

The reward is not only the sunrise. For a few minutes after first light the mountain throws a perfect triangular shadow across the plain below — a shadow that appears to stand up rather than lie flat. The climb is hard but not technical; anyone reasonably fit can do it, and the season runs from the December full moon to May, when the stairway is lit and the stalls are open.
