Hot Air Ballooning over Dambulla
Lift off at first light and drift over paddy fields, jungle tanks and the Lion Rock itself.
Ballooning runs in Sri Lanka only from November to April, when the morning air over the dry zone is still enough to fly. You meet in the dark, watch the envelope inflate, and lift off as the sun comes up over the Kandalama reservoir.
An hour aloft takes you across paddy fields, jungle, village tanks and — wind permitting — within sight of Sigiriya rock, which looks quite different from above than it does from the queue on the stairway. Peacocks and monitor lizards scatter below you and it is completely silent apart from the burner. You land wherever the wind decides, and the chase vehicle finds you for breakfast.
